Lack of appetite, need support

I've posted on the RNY and main board recently re: my lack of appetite in the mornings. But if I think about it, I haven't been eating much the rest of the day either.

Basically, I have butterflies in my stomach in the AMs and the idea of food doesn't appeal to me. (I'm certain it isn't morning sickness.)  I can manage to have a a few cups of tea in the mornings, which I find comforting. (And I put milk in my tea, so there is a bit of protein/calories in that.)

Yesterday morning I forced myself to have some yogurt w/protein powder mixed in.

As far as the rest of the day goes, lately, I just haven't been eating as much as I was a few weeks ago.

I've already put in a call to the NUT at my surgeon's office.

But if anyone can tell me how they eat when they don't feel like it, I'd appreciate it very much!

When I don't feel like eating (and this happens alot) I can always can get some cottage cheese in me. If not that then I go for the greek yogurt. The thought of a protein shake gags me and I wish I could stand them but I can't get past the smell. I did find Slim Fast low carb in the can and I can drink almost a full can of it. When I go to Modesto I am going to pick up some Click at Costco.
Good luck and keep trying.

"but I'm not hungry!"  I want to print that on a t-shirt, because it seems as though I'm always not hungry.

This is my struggle...

I know I HAVE TO eat. I know that I do not eat enough.  I know that not eating enough can stall your weight loss, this is what I've been experiencing. For example, yesterday I ate a whopping 950 calories...not good. Despite running 13 miles on Sunday, I did not lose any weight.

You have to eat in the morning, it gets your metabolism working in the morning so that you are burning calories throughout the day. I usually have a protein shake, or hard boiled eggs.

I do better when I eat 4-5 small meals a day, spaced about 2-3 hours apart. Its challenging to get all my water in though.

THANK GOD for exercise, because it's the only thing that sparks my appetite. After a good run, I'm hungry and I eat.

Some of my advice to you is:  make your food appetizing...put it on a nice plate, sit down, relax, make it an event.  Try changing your routine, eat something different.   Remind yourself that your body needs fuel or it will not lose weight (This is usually a kicker for me) Journal your food intake for a few days and see how much more food you need to take in. Exercise hard! (which is good for you anyways) and it might spark your hunger.

Good luck!

Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired."

LOL on the t-shirt Monica! By the way, I was going through my closet and trying some stuff on. A friend of mine had just given me a few pairs of pants. I tried them on a few weeks ago, and I had thought that they fit, and just needed the hems done.

Well, as I tried them on yesterday I saw that they did not fit--they were baggy in the back of the legs. Not sure why I didn't notice that the first time (granted, it was a few weeks ago and I've lost a few pounds since then).

Anyhoo, the point of all this rambling is that I have 2 more pairs of pants in size 12 that I will be bringin' to our next coffee. Hopefully you will like the way they look.

Monica has some good advise there.  Make sure you try and get protein in any way you can.  I go through the same things, somedays I want to eat, others I forget to eat.  I think that surgery has just rearranged how much food is not so important in our lives any longer.  We used to live to eat, now we eat to live.  Is that the right way I said that?  I always try to get something in me on the days there is just not reason to eat.  Weird that we go through this.

Wishing you the best, Diane

Hi sweetie!! I think the lack of appetite is normal for us! I can't really say that I'm ever really "hungry" anymore, I eat because I have to. Now "head hunger" is a WHOLE other story, that seems to be constant!!!!
Anyway, have you tried protein coffee or tea for breakfast? It is a good alternative to no breakfast. This is how I do it to make it not clump up or get icky in the hot liquid.  I mix the protein powder with whatever milk I am using in my coffee and mix it really good. Then I add this to my really hot coffee (so it doesn't cool down too much) and that seems to work best. I'm sure it would work with hot tea too.
Also, here are my greek yogurt ideas that I use...

I use the 2% Trader Joe's generic one, and I have 3 faves that I
always tell people about, I always use 1/3 of a box of sf jello pudding powder and enough Torani syrup to make it the right consistancy and then whatever other additions I am using, here they are...

Lemon ~ sf lemon pudding powder mix (about 1/3 small box), a splash of sf lemon Torani syrup(I only had lemon Torani once special ordered, so other flavors that match, like white choc or vanilla can be used), and a lemon Splenda stick and sometimes a splash of sf coconut Torani syrup

PB/Choc ~ sf choc. pudding powder mix (about 1/3 small box), about a Tbls. of peanut butter, a splash of sf Pbutter Torani syrup (white choc. or toffee Torani works). If you aren't into the choc. you can still make this using cheesecake or white choc. pudding powder mix instead and it is PButter Heaven!!!

"green stuff" ~ sf pistachio pudding powder mix (about 1/3 small box), crushed pineapple, and a splash of sf coconut Torani syrup

sometimes I will add some of my Kashi Go Lean cereal for crunch!   PB HEAVEN is usually my yogurt of choice lately, it is YUMMO!!!!

Hope some of this helps, but just know you are NOT alone!!!!

I think the lack of appetite is normal for us! I can't really say that I'm ever really "hungry" anymore, I eat because I have to. Can't disagree with that.  For me, what I've noticed is that lately (the past few weeks) my appetite and eating has definitely decreased below what I usually eat.

Anyway, have you tried protein coffee or tea for breakfast? Not a coffee drinker, but am definitely a tea drinker.  I once tried to put protein powder into my tea but it clumped. I will have to try your procedure to see if I can make it work.

Thanks!

Hi! Mix your protien in your cold milk first, then add the mixed protien into your hot tea. I do this with my occasional decaf coffee and love it.

Rachel,

I did this today and it worked really well. I poured 4 oz of milk into the blender cup that I use for shakes (the thingie with the whisk ball in it), and then I added 1 scoop of unflavored whey protein powder (which has 26 g of protein in it).

I made two cups of tea this afternoon, and was able to use all the milk/protein mixture that way.

I really like drinking tea, so this was a VERY helpful tip for me. I had once tried to make authentic chai (which requires hot milk) post-op, because pre-op I really liked it, and it came out terribly because the protein got all lumpy. So I had given up on "protein tea". But now I see that with a few modifications, I can even have my protein chai again and drink it too!

Thanks again, this tip is really going to make a difference.
